SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- A Poorwill Quest\, Redux!
DESCRIPTION:Repeating a successful expedition\, we’ll hike up a fire road on the east face of North Peak in Mount Diablo State Park\, to see Common Poorwills as they forage for moths along the fire roads through the chaparral. They will be detected by their eyeshine from our lights. \nThis is a nocturnal hike. It is Trail Category 3 because\, although only 2 miles round-trip\, the road is quite steep and there is a stream crossing near the trailhead with the possibility of getting wet feet. Bring layers\, wellington-type boots that can be stashed in the bushes after the stream crossing and exchanged for normal hiking boots\, and a flashlight/headlamp. Expect to be in the field for ~1.5 hrs. \nTrail Rating: 3 — Strenuous. Read trip details!\nElevation change: Substantial\, steep in places\, and we will be descending after dark.\nLeader: Jerry Britten\nMeet: GPS 37°53’58.7″N 121°52’24.5″W\nDirections: From Clayton drive east on Marsh Creek Road.
