SUMMARY:Introducing the Birds of Heather Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Natural Area at Heather Farm is an underrated birding site. It is possible to see five species of heron one day\, and on the next five species of sparrow. Common Gallinule and Sora are frequently reported\, along with wintering ducks and migrating passerines. All told\, over 200 species have been recorded at Heather Farm over the years. The Natural Area is also in need of conservation advocacy\, as it is under constant pressure from park users who are more interested in sports and recreation than wildlife or habitat. \n“Introducing the Birds of Heather Farm” is a series of bird walks intended to promote appreciation of birds and of the Natural Area\, and to help new birders improve their skills. In addition to this announcement in the Quail it will be promoted via flyers in the park and at local businesses. If you are new to birding\, or would enjoy an introduction to Heather Farm\, please sign up via Eventbrite! If you know anyone who’s getting their start in birding invite them to sign up too:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/introducing-the-birds-of-heather-farm-tickets-991048712377 \nIf you’re a somewhat more experienced birder—not necessarily an “expert”—your assistance in this program is invited! MDBA members who can turn out to help with this “Introduction” bird walk\, spotting birds and sharing experience with new birders\, do not need to sign up via Eventbrite. The low number of signup spots is intended to limit the number of beginners so that each may receive some personal attention. \nIf you can join us to help spot birds\, or would like copies of the flyer to post somewhere in the area—your office? your favorite coffee shop? the bulletin board at a library or city facility?—please email Matt: mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Bird Identification Techniques Workshop 2021—Part 2
DESCRIPTION:There are many challenges to becoming a birder\, particularly if you want to know what everything you are looking at is! In other words\, you want to put a name to a face. The problem is that it does take a lot of practice; the good thing is that practice is birding\, and that is fun! One major challenge is that we focus so much of field marks that sometimes we do not see the forest for the trees. The real way we identify birds is by looking at them not as parts\, but as wholes\, not only in pattern and color\, but also in the way they move and behave. In addition\, we hardly ever focus on one of the most important features on a bird: the face! This workshop begins with getting you to understand how the brain identifies birds–the psychology and brain science behind bird identification. We use that to understand how we can best use our innate skills at recognition to apply this to birding. We also discuss tips and tricks that apply to certain groups of birds and facilitate their identification. We think about techniques that may work to speed up learning birds and also tips on how to get better at bird identification even when you are not out in the field on a birding trip. Your computer can even be a learning tool! This will be a holistic\, multi-faceted workshop on bird identification. I guarantee to you that it will not be like any birding how-to classes you have attended before. I am hoping you will come out of it with a brand-new outlook on bird identification\, and one that will hopefully take away some of the frustration felt in trying to identify birds yourself! \nAlvaro Jaramillo is an internationally known ornithologist and expert. Alvaro has a B.S. in Zoology and an M.S. in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Toronto\, and also conducted research at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver\, British Columbia. An expert on the birds of California and North America\, he wrote the American Birding Association Field Guide to Birds of California and New World Blackbirds. He is also an authority on the birds of Chile\, authoring Birds of Chile (2003)\, collaborating on Chile’s Important Bird Areas program\, and helping to identify a new bird species there\, Oceanites pincoyae (Pincoya Storm-Petrel). An author and contributor to numerous field guides and popular publications\, Alvaro’s passion is not only to understand the biology and natural history of birds\, but to enrich other’s enjoyment of birds and further avian conservation and he leads birding trips throughout the world with his company\, Alvaro’s Adventures.

SUMMARY:Using eBird (Virtual Tutorial)
DESCRIPTION:eBird is among the world’s largest biodiversity-related science projects\, with more than 100 million bird sightings contributed each year by eBirders around the world. A collaborative enterprise with hundreds of partner organizations\, thousands of regional experts\, and hundreds of thousands of users\, eBird is managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. \nThis tutorial is aimed at new users.  It will introduce the features and navigation of the site\, illustrate how to use the site to explore hotspots\, species and other data\, and instruct how to enter checklists through the desktop site and the eBird mobile app. \nPlease contact the organizer (below) for info on how to sign up for this tutorial\, free and open to MDAS members.

SUMMARY:iNaturalist\, a Tutorial for Citizen Scientists by Kendall Oei
DESCRIPTION:One 2-hour class and one 4-hour field trip\nClass: Tuesday\, November 12\, 7-9 pm\nField Trip: Sunday\, November 17\, 8 am-noon\nSave Mount Diablo office in Walnut Creek (maximum 15 participants)\nCost: $25 MDAS members and $30 non-members \nClass Description: Naturalist and nature videographer Kendall Oei will convert you into an active\, and interactive\, citizen scientist in 90 minutes. An early adaptor to the revolutionary digital app\, iNaturalist\, developed by Bay Area naturalists and now used globally\, Kendall will walk us through the iNaturalist website and the phone app\, showing us how we can each become a resource to science. iNaturalist is all these things: a place to record nature observations\, an in-depth nature guide—it is great for local sightings—and a source of deep enjoyment. Kendall’s presentation will also be a workshop\, so bring your phone or laptop if you want to participate\, along with some recent photos you have taken. He will show you how to post and annotate them. It is easy and it adds your observations to the joint record for all to access. Before the date\, create an iNaturalist account by going to www.inaturalist.org/\, and download the app in your phone’s app store. It is free. \nInstructor Bio: Kendall moved to the Bay Area in 1994 from Southern California\, where he grew up. He fell in love immediately with the open spaces here\, and took up photography so he could show his family and friends the things he saw on weekend hikes. Photography led him to his current passion for nature videography. As part of his quest to document the beauty and wonders in our area\, he needed a resource to help identify the flora and fauna in his videos. That is when he discovered iNaturalist. See one of Kendall’s most recent Mount Diablo films here: Kendall Oei \nTo enroll in this class\, please select Member or Non-Member below and click ENROLL. SUMMARY:2019 Fall Avian Treasure Hunt by Juan-Carlos Solis
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for the migrant treasure hunt and sharpen your birding skills by better understanding local bird distribution patterns in time and space during the fall. We’ll review how seasonal changes in various Bay Area habitats influence the birds you’ll expect to find in the field\, with a strong emphasis on birdsong and behavior. You’ll get practical birding tips on what to look for throughout the seasons when “hunting” for migratory birds. At the end of this course you’ll be better prepared to find local migrant and vagrant birds with confidence. Moreover\, the principles you’ll learn regarding bird distribution in relation to seasonal changes and habitats apply to any place you may explore. \nQuetzal Adventures founder Juan-Carlos Solis is passionate about connecting people to nature and designing programs to experience our planet first-hand. He’s a seasoned expedition leader and naturalist with 20 years of experience managing and leading local trips in California and in all of the world’s seven continents. www.quetzaladventures.com \nTwo 2-hour classes and two 4-hour field trips\nClasses: Thursday\, Sept. 19 and 26\, 7-9 PM\nField Trips: Saturday\, Sept. 21 and 28 (location TBD) 8 AM-Noon\nLafayette Library and Learning Center\, Oak Room (max 15 participants)\nCost: $50 MDAS members/$55 non-members \n\n \n\n\n\nMember / Non-Member\n\n\nMember $50.00 USDNon-Member $55.00 USD
