I have 1 extra red light flashlight. \nTrail Rating: 2 – A few stretches of broken ground\, or substantially over 1 mile on easy trails\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeeting Point: Hidden Lakes Park\, Morello Ave & Chilpancingo Pkwy\, Martinez\, CA 94553.\nDirections: Take the I-680 North toward Sacramento. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- A Sunset Bird Walk on the Martinez Shoreline
DESCRIPTION:For this trip\, we’ll be taking a leisurely sunset walk around the lagoon and shoreline of Radke Martinez Regional Shoreline Park. This flat\, unpaved trail meanders through a habitat mosaic of urban parkland\, saltmarsh\, and seashore. It’s a good outing for beginner birders to see a diverse mix of common northern California species at fairly close range. \nWe’ll be walking the trail during an incoming mid-tide\, which hopefully will push some shorebird species and seagoing ducks closer to the trail. We’ll see! This is usually a good spot for Marsh Wren\, Black-necked Stilt\, and Black-crowned Night-Heron regardless of tidal condition. \nBathrooms\, water fountains\, and parking are plentiful\, but it may be colder at the shoreline than it is inland. Dress in layers just in case. \nTrail Rating: 1 – Easy. Mostly level paths\, up to 1 mile walking\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeeting Point: 87 N Court St\, Martinez\, CA 94553. (The first parking lot on the right on N Court St.)\nDirections: Take the I-680 north toward Sacramento. Take Exit 56\, Waterfront Rd. toward Marina Vista Rd. Turn left onto Waterfront Rd. and continue onto Marina Vista Ave. Turn right onto Ferry St. Then\, turn right onto Joe DiMaggio Dr. Then\, turn left onto N Court St. The Meeting Point is the first big parking lot on the right. \nThis trip is limited to 12 participants. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sunset-bird-walk-on-the-martinez-shoreline-tickets-1324625413269 \n(Photo of Black-crowned Night Heron by Warren Regelmann)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Putah Creek at Pedrick Road
DESCRIPTION:This delightful\, fairly short stretch of Putah Creek (~3/4 miles)\, can be very productive during Spring migration. It’s a fairly easy walk through lovely riparian right down in the creek bed. And the occasional sandy stretch will often host several species of birds bathing in the shallows. \nExpect to find a nice selection of warblers: Yellow\, Black-throated Gray\, Orange-crowned\, Wilson’s\, MacGillivray’s\, Hermit\, Townsend’s\, and perhaps a Nashville. And\, of course\, Pacific Slope Flycatcher\, Western Wood Pewee\, Western Tanager\, and keep an eye overhead for a Swainson’s Hawk. Vagrants pop up from time to time (I found a Tennessee Warbler a couple years ago)\, so don’t discount the prospect of a nice surprise. \nBring water and snacks. Facilities are limited to a porta-potty at the parking lot. \nTrail Rating: Category 1\, an easy walk.\nLeader: Tracy Farrington. 925-788-6223\nMeet: Putah Creek parking lot (description to follow)\nDirections: Take 680 east\, cross the Benicia bridge\, remain to the right\, and continue on 680 for ~14 miles to Cordelia where you will merge on to 80 east. Take 80 east about 27 miles to Pedrick Road. This will come up about a mile and a half past 113 south towards Dixon. Turn north (left) at Pedrick\, drive about two miles\, and just as you cross over Putah Creek\, turn left on to a short dirt road and into the Putah Creek parking lot\, where we’ll meet. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/putah-creek-at-pedrick-road-tickets-1322667697689

There is a $5 parking fee here\, and note the kiosk only takes either exact cash—no change given!—or debit/credit card. Birds seen at Lagoon Valley have included Western Bluebird\, Cliff Swallow\, Bullock’s Oriole and Western Kingbird. If the lake level is low\, there is a good chance for Wilson’s Snipe and Greater Yellow-legs. Bufflehead and American Wigeon are often among the waterbirds on the lake. \nTrail Rating: 1 – Easy. Mostly level paths.\nLeader: Mona Lange\, 510-414-2959\nMeet: Pena Adobe Park\, off I-80 between Fairfeld and Vacaville.\nDirections: Take 680 to 80 East towards Sacramento. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Pine Canyon
DESCRIPTION:This fieldtrip is good for birders of all levels\, including beginners. \nPine Canyon\, which includes the Castle Rock EBRPD recreational area and the Diablo Foothills Regional Park just beyond\, provides rich habitat and resources for spring migrants passing through\, as well as for many returning and nesting summer residents. Warbling Vireos along with their cousins\, the Cassin’s Vireo\, nest within the canyon. While there are no guarantees in birding\, we’ll hope to find Bullock’s Orioles\, Western Flycatchers and House Wrens\, and if we’re lucky\, a Lazuli Bunting. Warblers often seen here include Yellow-rumped\, Wilson’s\, Orange-crowned\, and Townsend’s. It’s migration season so we’ll be hoping for rare visitors\, too! \nBring water and snacks\, and lunch if you’d like to eat after the trip at one of the shady picnic tables in the park. \nTrail Rating: Category 2–3. Mostly wide dirt trail with some short climbs. We’ll have to cross little Pine Creek several times—with no bridges. These crossings are not very treacherous but can be muddy\, or a bit adventuresome\, depending on recent rains.\nElevation change: 200 feet\nLeader: Ted Robertson\, 925-899-1872\nMeet: Diablo Foothills Regional Park trailhead parking lot\nDirections: From Ygnacio Valley Road\, drive south on either Walnut Avenue or Oak Grove Road to the traffic circle. Continue south on Castle Rock Road\, pass Northgate High School\, then drive to the end of the road. \nThis field trip is limited to 18 participants. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Black Diamond Mines
DESCRIPTION:This trip includes a steep climb up a rocky trail with an elevation gain of several hundred feet. Why make the climb? Because the location offers the best chance in our MDBA territory to see and hear Canyon Wrens! Footing can be tricky—be advised!\nThere is no guarantee on finding the wrens\, but we will certainly see many other birds. California Thrasher\, Rufous-crowned Sparrow and Phainopepla are often seen here though again\, nothing is certain. At the worst we will share an adventure in a beautiful and historically interesting location. Be sure to bring enough water\, and lunch. \nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\nRating: Category 3\, difficult uphill trail\, potentially hot.\nElevation change: 600 feet\, steep in places.\nMeet: Black Diamond Mines parking lot at the top of Somersville Road. \nDirections: Exit Hwy 4 at Somersville Road in Antioch. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Moorhen + McNabney Marshes
DESCRIPTION:Two trips this month! Mt. View Sanitary District has offered MDBA special access for a Saturday visit. Both trips will be open to the public\, and are very suitable for beginning birders. Binoculars are available for borrowing—just email the leader in advance so they know how many extra pairs to bring. \nCreated by MVSD in 1974\, Moorhen Marsh was the first wetland on the west coast that made use of treated effluents as its primary water source. Today the 21-acre constructed wetland offers critical habitat for wildlife. Native species dependent on Moorhen Marsh for habitat include the western pond turtle\, North American river otter\, and many species of birds. Directly across the freeway\, McNabney Marsh—aka Waterbird Regional Preserve—in winter hosts many species of ducks\, shorebirds and waterbirds. \nWe’ll meet at the observation deck near the south end of McNabney Marsh\, off of Arthur Road\, and scan the area with our scopes. After that we’ll move the cars a short distance into the MVSD facility and take a walk around the cleverly human-made Moorhen Marsh. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. Unpaved paths can get muddy after rain.\nElevation change: N/A\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com \nMeet: Meet at the observation deck off of Arthur Road at 8:30 AM. There’s plenty of parking. \nDirections: From I-680 northbound\, exit at Pacheco Blvd\, turn right onto Arthur Road and go under the freeway. Arthur Road will bend left. Where Arthur Road ends\, the paved road turns sharp left through a gate into Mt. View Sanitary’s private access road. Drive about .3 mile to the gravel parking lot just before the one-lane tunnel. The observation deck is to the right (east) of the road. \nThis field trip is free and open to the public\, with prior registration required. Limited to 15 participants. Participants will need to click to acknowledge the MDBA liability waiver. Anyone entering Moorhen Marsh will need to sign the MVSD liability waiver also\, to be provided on site. \nRegister for Wednesday 3/19:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-moorhen-marsh-and-mcnabney-marsh-tickets-1252473153919 \n(Image of Black-crowned Night Herons by Isaac Aronow.)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Lynch Canyon Open Space Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Lynch Canyon Open Space\, an asset of the Solano County Land Trust\, is a fantastic place for raptors in the winter! It’s also home to grassland species\, and waterbirds on the reservoir. \nThe trails are wide and firmly packed but unpaved. Participants will be able to choose between two routes: A loop of about 2.5 miles around Lynch Reservoir\, with some gentle elevation gain; or a longer loop of about 3.25 miles with a longer\, steeper climb (14% grade at one stretch). Co-leaders will be present to accompany along either route. On both routes we’ll stop frequently to look for raptors\, and to scope the reservoir. \nLynch Canyon is still a working ranch so we can expect to encounter free-ranging cattle. Some of the trails are part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail\, and we may encounter bicyclists\, e-bikes\, and equestrians. \nPlease bring $6 (exact bills) for the off-season parking fee. Bring ample water (none is available on site) and sun protection. There is almost no shade on the trails. \nThere is a pit toilet at the parking lot. Solano County Land Trust asks us to bring our own hand sanitizer. \nBring snacks or lunch. On the longer loop\, there are picnic tables. \nLeaders: Susana de Trapaga\, trapaga@sbcglobal.net\, 510.333.2693 and Maureen Lahiff\, MLahiff@aol.com\, 510.484.6529\nHike Rating: 2 (longer route is 3) Elevation change on the longer loop trail option is approximately 500 feet.\nMeeting place: Parking lot for Lynch Canyon Open Space\nURL: https://maps.app.goo.gl/7mHmYSfFws1CmowQ6 \nHeavy rain cancels the trip. We’ll send an email if we’re cancelling\, or if weather looks iffy. \nDirections: Take I-80 east to exit 36\, American Canyon Road/Hiddenbrook Pkwy. At the stop sign at the end of the exit ramp\, turn right and then immediately left onto McGary Road\, which runs alongside the freeway. After about 1.7 miles\, turn left onto Lynch Road\, pass under I-80\, and drive all the way to the parking lot. \nFor more information about Lynch Canyon Open Space: https://www.solanocounty.com/depts/rm/countypark/lynchcyn.asp \nREGISTER: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lynch-canyon-tickets-1050134830547 \n(Image of Golden Eagle and Raven by Isaac Aronow)
