SUMMARY:WOW Presents: Mount Diablo State Park Centennial
DESCRIPTION:Rising almost 4\,000 feet from the valleys of Contra Costa County\, Mount Diablo is one of the most recognized geologic features of the San Francisco Bay Area. This year\, Mount Diablo State Park is celebrating 100 years since being established in 1921. Join Wonders of the World (WOW) for a webinar that will explore the human history of the mountain from its humble beginnings to present day including the historic Civilian Conservation Corps who built most of its infrastructure. Discussions include the history of early Native Americans\, cattle ranching\, horse racing\, automobile racing\, and tourism on the mountain. Learn how the park has grown in size thanks to visionaries like Mary Bowerman and Raymond Force. See how different organizations protect the mountain like Mount Diablo Interpretive Association (MDIA) and Save Mount Diablo (SMD). Our speaker will be Steve Smith\, President of MDIA.

SUMMARY:Memorial Service for Jimm Edgar
DESCRIPTION:A memorial service for Jimm Edgar\, who passed away on July 14\, 2021\, will be held on Monday\, August 30\, at 1 pm\, at First Pres. Click here to RSVP. \nClick here to go to the livestream service. In-person attendance is limited to 150 people. \nJimm Edgar\, longtime MDAS leader\, passed away peacefully on July 14th in Alabama with his wife Bettie by his side. \nJimm served as MDAS president multiple times during his long tenure with the Chapter. Most recently\, he was president from 2005 -2016. At general meetings\, his easy manner\, engaging smile and humorous style made audience members feel welcomed and appreciated. He loved to tell stories about birds\, often repeating his favorites. One of his most beloved birds was the Harlequin Duck and he seemed to thrill at explaining the meaning of Histrionicus histrionicus. Personally\, I believe I heard the story at least three times during our travels together. At the meetings\, if someone shared a very notable bird sighting\, Jimm would often respond\, “Oh\, is that right\,” lending even more significance to the report. \nJimm annually led field trips for MDAS. His favorite outing was to his beloved Mt. Diablo where he emphasized the beauty of the wildflowers as well the variety of birds. \nClearly\, Jimm loved birds and birding\, and he was especially devoted to organizing and coordinating the MDAS Christmas Bird Counts. After the CBCs\, it was always a fun event to compile all of the groups’ sightings over dinner. Jimm obviously took much satisfaction and pride in hosting these events. Beyond MDAS\, he volunteered to do counts for several other Chapters as well. \nAt the June\, 2017\, MDAS General Meeting\, Jimm was presented with the National Audubon Society’s Great Egret Award for his significant long-term contributions to Audubon. Shortly thereafter\, Jimm moved to Alabama. Jimm will be long-remembered and dearly missed. \nThere will be a Celebration of Jimm’s life at his home church – the First Presbyterian Church in Berkeley on his actual birthday August 30th 2021\, at 1PM PST. Reception to follow. The Celebration for Jimm’s life will be live-streamed. As a teenager\, Jimm met Christ through Young Life Ministries and his Young Life leader\, Spokane resident Dick Silk\, who was his mentor and lifelong friend. In lieu of flowers\, please consider a contribution to Young Life Jimm Edgar Memorial Fund\, 420 N. Cascade Ave.\, Colorado Springs\, CO 80903. \n-Paul Schorr

SUMMARY:Mitchell Canyon Birding Hotspot—Spring Migration
DESCRIPTION:Spring in the East Bay outdoors means enjoying comfortable weather\, looking at beautiful wildflowers\, and greeting the colorful migratory birds flying up from further south that either settle here to find mates and nest\, or stop briefly before continuing up north. Mitchell Canyon\, on the north slope of Mount Diablo and lying within Mount Diablo State Park\, is known by birders as perhaps the best place around to see this annual rush of feathered color and song. \nLogon at 7pm on April 21st for the next Mount Diablo Interpretive Association virtual presentation to see some beautiful birds\, fascinating migratory maps and learn what we all must do to help Mitchell Canyon’s beautiful birds survive. Presented by Juan Pablo Galván Martínez (Mount Diablo State Park volunteer\, Mount Diablo Audubon Society Conservation Chair\, and Senior Land Use Manager for Save Mount Diablo).

SUMMARY:A Rainforest at our Feet: Local wetland restoration in the San Francisco Bay Area
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, acclaimed plant ecologist John Zentner will discuss how wetland health impacts the health of birds and wildlife. John will guide participants through understanding different types of local wetlands\, from marshes\, vernal pools\, riparian wetlands\, and more. He will then outline methods of wetland conservation and how these projects are crucial to maintaining holistic and healthy ecosystems that sustain all life. \nAbout The Speaker: \nJohn is a plant ecologist specializing in landscape restoration. He has an undergraduate degree from UCSB\, and graduate degrees/certifications from U of O and the University of Oslo. John has been the wetland specialist for the California Coastal Commission\, the program manager for the Coastal Conservancy’s enhancement program\, the chair of the SF Bay Habitat Joint Venture’s Implementation Committee\, and is currently the chair of the Arundo Removal and Restoration Team (ARRT) at the Walnut Creek Watershed Council. Over the past thirty years\, he has restored vernal pool complexes\, riparian systems\, perennial and seasonal marshes and native grasslands. Presently\, John is focused on working with community groups of local restoration projects\, especially small creeks\, and researching landscape restoration\, especially the undiscovered historic links.

SUMMARY:The Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The Great Backyard Bird Count is coming! On February 12–15th\, birders all over the world will count birds for four days to provide an important snapshot of where birds are right before their migrations. We may not be able to bird together on MDAS field trips\, but we can still contribute to science meaningfully from home or on our personal birding trips. \nYou can learn the background and importance of this community science activity that can be done right from your backyard by reading “The Great Backyard Bird Count Is Coming!” by Alan Bade\, MDAS Community Science Coordinator. This article is from the February 2021 edition of The Quail.
