SUMMARY:Monthly Program: June 2025
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area Wildlife: An Irreverent Guide\nJeff Miller\n  \nMount Diablo Bird Alliance will meet Thursday\, June 5 in the Camellia Room at the Gardens at Heather Farm\, 1540 Marchbanks Drive\, Walnut Creek\, CA 94598. \n\n6:30 PM Doors Open\n7:00 PM Announcements\n7:15 PM Refreshments and Raffle\n7:30 PM Main Program: Bay Area Wildlife: An Irreverent Guide\n*as a conservation organization we encourage you to bring your own mug for coffee or tea \nConservationist Jeff Miller will talk about his new book Bay Area Wildlife: An Irreverent Guide\, which invites Bay Area denizens to embrace their local fauna. Bay Area Wildlife casts a spotlight on the whereabouts and personalities of the Bay Area’s furred\, feathered\, and fork-tongued neighbors. Meet “screaming death parrots” (aka peregrine falcons)\, “disco slugs dressed for a P-Funk concert” (nudibranchs)\, and “rototillers with fur” (badgers)\, among many others. Jeff’s colorful descriptions offer a compilation of each species’ natural history and fun facts—did you know beavers have vanilla-scented butts\, elephant seals have the loudest recorded burps (at 130 decibels)\, only Usain Bolt can run faster than a roadrunner\, or that pooping whales might possibly save the world? Each section also includes tips on when\, where\, and how to best find and observe each animal. This irreverent and quirky guide to the coolest animal neighbors in the Bay Area will have you gawking at elk\, whooping with cranes\, and crowning yourself a crossing guard for newts before you know it. Mount Diablo critters featured in the book include gray foxes\, bobcats\, long-tailed weasels\, golden eagles\, peregrine falcons\, Alameda whipsnakes\, western rattlesnakes\, tarantulas\, and convergent ladybugs. Jeff will discuss iconic and ecologically essential wildlife species that are returning to our region\, such as beavers\, steelhead trout\, condors\, and black bears. \nJeff Miller is an amateur naturalist\, professional conservationist\, and passionate advocate for wildlife. Jeff is the founder of the nonprofit Alameda Creek Alliance and has served as its executive director since 1997\, working to restore steelhead trout and salmon to Alameda Creek and protect the Bay Area’s largest local watershed. He’s a senior conservation advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity\, spearheading biodiversity protection campaigns throughout the Bay Area and California\, preparing endangered species listing petitions\, writing press releases\, and doing public outreach and organizing around wildlife protection issues. Over the last quarter century\, he has been involved in conservation efforts for dozens of the most iconic imperiled wildlife species in the Bay Area\, the most recent being securing state protections for burrowing owls. Jeff says that loving nature is as important as fighting for it and grieving ecological destruction. People tend to care more about animals and places that they have a direct experience with\, so he wrote Bay Area Wildlife: An Irreverent Guide to try to connect readers with our regional fauna and inspire them to make a pilgrimage to witness the Bay Area’s spectacular natural phenomena.

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- A Sunset Bird Walk on the Martinez Shoreline
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be taking a leisurely sunset walk around the lagoon and shoreline of Radke Martinez Regional Shoreline Park. This flat\, unpaved trail meanders through a habitat mosaic of urban parkland\, saltmarsh\, and seashore. It’s a good outing for beginner birders to see a diverse mix of common northern California species at fairly close range. This is usually a good spot for Marsh Wren\, Black-necked Stilt\, and Black-crowned Night-Heron regardless of tidal condition. \nBathrooms\, water fountains\, and parking are plentiful\, but it may be quite a bit colder and breezier on the shoreline than it is inland. Dress in layers just in case. \nTrail Rating: 1 – Easy. Mostly level paths\, up to 1 mile walking\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeeting Point: 87 N Court St\, Martinez\, CA 94553. (The first parking lot on the right on N Court St.)\nDirections: Take the I-680 north toward Sacramento. Take Exit 56\, Waterfront Rd. toward Marina Vista Rd. Turn left onto Waterfront Rd. and continue onto Marina Vista Ave. Turn right onto Ferry St. Then\, turn right onto Joe DiMaggio Dr. Then\, turn left onto N Court St. The meeting point is the first big parking lot on the right. \nThis trip is limited to 12 participants. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Pt. Pinole: Shorebirds in the Shade
DESCRIPTION:We’ll search for shorebirds in the shade of the fragrant eucalyptus groves that line the shores of Pt. Pinole Regional Park. July marks the beginning of shorebird migration: peeps\, plovers\, and more are starting to trickle back in from the north. We’ll scan the beach as the tide rises for shorebirds and marine ducks. The park can also yield surprises\, like the Bobolink that lingered there last fall. \nThe trail is narrow\, dusty\, and rocky at points. There are not many places to sit and rest along the way. There is a bathroom and water fountain at the trailhead. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Please factor in the potential for westbound traffic when planning your departure. \nTrail Rating: 2\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeeting Point: Pt. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Lafayette Lakeside Loop
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after a hard day’s work at the beautiful Lafayette Reservoir. Tucked into the hills between the coast and interior Contra Costa County\, the reservoir’s forested hills are home to many pine-oak residents like Spotted Towhees\, Red-shouldered Hawks\, and Band-tailed Pigeons. The iconic 100-year-old\, 170-foot-tall outlet tower in the center of the reservoir attracts many cormorants and the marshes around the edge often harbor herons. We may even get lucky enough to see a flock of American White Pelicans. \nWe’ll walk the 3-mile\, paved Lafayette Reservoir Trail that circles the reservoir to see what’s out there. Parking is $2/hr or $7/day. Please factor in northbound and eastbound traffic when planning your departure. \nTrail Rating: 2 – Over 2 miles walking with a couple of short steep climbs.\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeeting Point: The northern end of the parking lot (closer to the boathouse) of Lafayette Reservoir\, 3849 Mount Diablo Blvd\, Lafayette\, CA 94563 \nThis trip is limited to 15 participants. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Drakes Breach and Pt. Reyes National Seashore
DESCRIPTION:Point Reyes is one of the premiere birding locations in Northern California\, a great spot to find rarities during migration. We’ll meet at Drake’s Beach\, where there is excellent birding and a comfort stop\, and then head out to the “fish docks.” We may skip the lighthouse overlook on this trip and see if that time can be better spent elsewhere. \nBring water and lunch as this area is remote. \nRating: Category 2 — some walking on paved roads and groomed trails with significant grade.\nElevation change: 150 ft\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\, 925 482 6129\nMeet: Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center\, Drake’s Beach\n1 Drakes Beach Road\, Inverness\, CA 94937\nGPS: 38.027828257127936\, -122.96201741318059 \nDirections: Depending on your starting point\, take the best route to highway 101 north of San Rafael. From 101\, take Lucas Valley Road to Nicasio. At the reservoir turn left. Follow signs to Point Reyes Station\, and when you get to town turn left onto US-1. After passing through town (the Bovine Bakery is a traditional stop for breakfast pastries)\, turn right from US-1 onto Sir Francis Drake Blvd and follow it for 15 miles to Drakes Beach Road. Turn left and continue down Drakes Beach Road to the parking lot at the end. Leader will be parked near the visitor center. \nDue to limited parking at several stops on the Outer Point\, this field trip is limited to 12 participants. Sharing a car is helpful! There’s room to leave extra cars at the Drake’s Beach meeting point. \nSign up HERE:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/drakes-beach-point-reyes-national-seashore-registration-1598818371789 \n(Photo of Virginia Rail by Maren Smith)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Vaux's Swifts at McNear Brickyard\, San Rafael
DESCRIPTION:Vaux’s Swifts migrate south along the Pacific Americas Flyway each fall\, and one of their few known stopping points in Northern California is McNear Brick and Block in San Rafael. At sunset on many September and October evenings as many as 20\,000 swifts mass and fly into the decommissioned brickyard chimneys to spend the night. It’s an unforgettable sight! \nLeader: Maureen Lahiff\, MLahiff@aol.com\, 510.484.6529\nHike Rating: 1. This is essentially stationary observing\, so there is very little walking\, but a lot of standing. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Coyote Hills\, Fremont
DESCRIPTION:Ducks & Peeps! \nThis morning walk will take us on multiple trails within the beloved Coyote Hills Regional Park complex to search for southbound\, migrating shorebirds and inbound\, wintering waterfowl. We’ll first check out the reedy margins of the marshes on Chochenyo and Muskrat trails\, keeping an eye out for chatty Common Yellowthroats and Marsh Wrens\, and maybe even a secretive rail. Then\, we’ll cross the scrubby hills of Lizard Rock Trail\, where White-tailed Kites are not uncommon\, on our way to Bayview Trail. The trail is only a few yards away from the salt marsh evaporation ponds–the perfect place to search for flocks of migrating shorebirds. Some luck and a bit of scoping may even yield rarer species such as Snowy Plovers. \nShorebird ID can be both challenging and rewarding. This walk is especially good for intermediate birders looking to gain more experience with this tricky taxon\, but as always\, all skill levels are welcome! \nScopes are useful here. Carpooling is encouraged. \nThe trail is mostly unpaved and there is only one restroom at the trailhead. At this time of year it can be cool and windy\, or hot by mid-day. Please bring plenty of water\, sunscreen\, an extra layer (it can be cold and windy)\, a snack\, and any other equipment you need for hiking. \nTrip leader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nHike Rating: 2 – Some hills; more than 1 mile of walking\nMeeting Point: The parking lot at 8000 Patterson Ranch Rd.\, Fremont\, CA 9455. DESCRIPTION:Pacific Flyway Center\nVeronica Cornett\n\nMount Diablo Bird Alliance will meet Thursday\, November 6 in the Camellia Room at the Gardens at Heather Farm\, 1540 Marchbanks Drive\, Walnut Creek\, CA 94598. \n\n6:30 PM Doors Open\n7:00 PM Announcements\n7:15 PM Refreshments and Raffle\n7:30 PM Main Program: Pacific Flyway Center\n*as a conservation organization we encourage you to bring your own mug for coffee or tea \nVeronica Cornett of the Pacific Flyway Fund will share information about the development of the new Pacific Flyway Center\, which will be located in the Suisun Marsh in Fairfield\, California. The Pacific Flyway is one of four bird migration routes in North America. The Pacific Flyway Center will be front and center for this significant stopover on the north-south migration path for birds that stretches from Alaska to Patagonia. The Center will sit in the middle of this migratory corridor\, allowing every visitor an opportunity to see a great number of waterfowl and shorebirds\, as well as other wetland-dependent species. \nFifteen newly created wetlands and surrounded by grasslands will serve as the Center’s primary classroom\, providing a vivid and engaging education environment that is home to hundreds of species of native plants and animals. In the future the Education Center will complement the experience with interactive displays that highlight the importance of biodiversity and ecosystems. The Center will stand as an example of wildlife and wetland stewardship\, preserving this ecological wonder for generations to come\, and fulfilling Ken Hofmann’s vision to do something good for the Planet. \nPhoto by Veronica Cornett

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- McNabney Marsh & MVSD
DESCRIPTION:**Sorry\, this event has been CANCELLED by MVSD.** \nThis field trip is very suitable for beginning birders! Binoculars are available for borrowing\, just let the leader know in advance to bring an extra pair. \nMoorhen Marsh\, maintained by the Mt. View Sanitary District in Martinez is of the first water treatment facilities in the US that was designed to offer quality habitat for migrating birds. The marsh is usually only open for visits by appointment\, Monday thru Friday\, so this is an unusual chance to visit on a Saturday. We hope to see resident and overwintering ducks geese\, herons\, and passerines. \nJust across the freeway\, McNabney Marsh\, a.k.a Waterbird Regional Preserve\, hosts many more waterbirds and shorebirds as well. Marsh passerines and raptors might also be present. \nWe’ll meet at the observation deck near the south end of McNabney Marsh\, off Arthur Road\, and scan with our scopes. After that we’ll move the cars a short distance and take a walk around the artificial marshes operated by Mt. View Sanitary District. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. Paths are unpaved paths and potentially muddy\, if it’s rained recently.\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: The observation deck off Arthur Road at 8:30AM.\nGPS for meeting point: 38.019304268086714\, -122.09612963848679 \nDirections: From I-680 northbound\, exit at Pacheco Blvd\, turn right onto Arthur Road and go under the freeway. Arthur Road will bend left. Where Arthur Road ends the paved road turns sharp left through a gate onto MVSD’s private road. Drive about .3 mile to the gravel parking lot just before the one-lane tunnel. The observation deck is to the right (east) of the road. \nLimited to 15 participants. Participants acknowledge the MDBA Liability Waiver (available during registration)\, and will be required to sign a release of viability in order to enter the MVSD facility. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-mvsd-and-mcnabney-marsh-tickets-1853799075939 \n(Image by Alan Bade)

The trail is mostly unpaved and there is only one restroom at the trailhead. Please bring lots of water\, sunscreen (there is little shade on the trail)\, an extra layer (it will almost certainly be cold and possibly windy)\, a snack\, and any other equipment you need to hike. Plan accordingly. \nScopes are helpful here. The trip leader will have one to share\, and if you have one of your own feel free to bring it. \nDay parking is $6 per vehicle. \nTrail Rating: 3 – long and hilly\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeet: Walnut Staging Area\nGPS for meeting point: 37.8600370201877\, -121.69675961271844 \nDirections: From Clayton\, take Marsh Creek Road out past Round Valley. DESCRIPTION:Bornean Bristlehead. Because islands are isolated landmasses\, species that arrive there evolve separately from their parent groups\, eventually becoming unique through genetic drift. However\, because island species are restricted to small areas with limited populations\, they are highly susceptible to natural disasters—such as hurricanes\, volcanic eruptions\, tsunamis\, and rising sea levels—as well as human-caused pressures. This talk focuses on the issues unique to islands and how we might protect these vulnerable species. \n\n\nBob has taught birding classes in the Bay Area for over 25 years and is an avid traveler\, specifically seeking out islands in search of birds. He is a board member of the Farallon Islands Foundation\, an organization dedicated to fostering life on islands. He has visited many of the world’s major biodiversity hotspots\, including Madagascar\, Borneo\, Hawaii\, Indonesia\, New Guinea\, New Zealand\, and Cuba.\n\n  \nEastern Crested Berrypecker. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Bridgeway Island Pond\, West Sacramento
DESCRIPTION:Bridgeway Island Pond in West Sacramento is a low-key birding hotspot\, offering fairly close views of an assortment of waterfowl and shorebirds. In past years it’s been a great spot for Blue-winged Teal\, as well as American Avocet\, Cinnamon Teal\, and Sora. Easy access with a mostly flat\, grassy area. Not much walking will be required\, more standing and observing at different areas along the pond. We’ll make another bird-related stop afterwards\, to be determined based on weather. Last year we visited the Raptor Center in Davis. \nThis is a good trip for beginning birders! \nHike rating: 1 – Easy.\nLeader: Mona Lange\, 510-414-2959\nMeet: the McDonalds at 2244 Lake Washington Blvd. in West Sacramento at 9:15 AM for a restroom stop\, proceeding to the pond by 9:30.\nDirections: Take 80 East toward Sacramento. Exit at Enterprise and Harbor Blvd (exit 81) and go Right. Take the 2nd Left to Industrial Blvd. After a few miles Industrial Blvd changes its name to Lake Washington Blvd. Make a Left on Southport Parkway and then first left to enter the shopping center. Another first Left then leads to the McDonalds.\nGPS for the 9:15 meeting point at McDonalds: 38.556747929224194\, -121.5399085526047 \nAfter McDonalds we’ll go back out to Southport making a Right onto it. Going a few more miles\, make a Right on Oakland Bay Drive. First Right onto Bowen Island street which changes to Solomon Island Rd as it goes around the corner. First Right takes you to where we’ll park for the pond\, on Pender Island Street. We may have to park in the neighborhood also.\nGPS for the Pond\, where we expect to arrive by 9:30: 38.540701884803845\, -121.57782606798398 \nThis outing is limited to 12 birders of any experience level\, including beginners. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Woodbridge Road & Sandhill Crane Fly-In
DESCRIPTION:This outing is especially suitable for people with mobility issues. \nA very special trip arranged with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. At 3:45 PM we’ll meet their volunteer docents at the South Unit of the Woodbridge Ecological Reserve\, near Lodi\, where they will introduce us to the many waterfowl and shorebirds that winter in the area. \nAbout 90 minutes before sunset\, we will move over to the blinds that overlook the roosting area for Sandhill Cranes. We’ll be able to sit and watch as hundreds of cranes fly in for the evening. It’s a spectacular event! \nThis trip is open to all MDBA members of any birding level of experience\, and especially suitable for those with mobility issues. The platform overlooking the ponds at the South Unit—our first stop—is about 40 yards from the handicapped parking spots\, up a short\, accessible ramp. The blinds where we’ll sit and watch the cranes fly in are also just a short walk over level ground from the parking spots. There are toilets at the South Unit (and I think at the North Unit too\, though I’m not sure.) \nMDBA trip coordinator Matt Tarlach plans to drive a carpool to accommodate any member who doesn’t want to drive this distance (Woodbridge Reserve is a little over an hour from Heather Farm)\, or drive back after dark. If you would like to ride with this group\, please email ASAP after signing up\, so he knows how many would like to join the carpool. We may rent a minivan or other vehicle\, depending on what’s needed. \nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\nHike Rating: 0. A few very short walks over flat terrain.\nMeet: Carpool will meet at Heather Farm. If driving on your own\, meet at 3:45 at the South Unit of Woodbridge Ecological Reserve\nGPS for the meeting point: 38.15775478150474\, -121.44355433233056 \nTrip goes rain or shine. The blinds are open and unheated\, so dress to sit outdoors until after sunset\, about 90 minutes. \nThere is room in the blinds for about 25 people but parking for only about 14 cars. Plan to drive with a friend\, or to share a casual carpool with another member. \nDue to the capacity limit and expected strong interest\, this trip is for MDBA members only. Members may bring a guest; if you’d like to bring more than one guest please email the leader before booking. If you may bring children\, please consider the need to sit quietly outdoors\, on a cool evening\, for over an hour. \nThere is no charge by MDBA for this event—including for the carpool\, if needed. However\, every attendee must have a Lands Pass from the CA DFW: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Licensing/Lands-Pass \nSign up at the link below. And if the outing is ‘Sold Out’\, please join the waitlist! There are usually some cancellations from the early bookings:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/woodbridge-road-sandhill-crane-fly-in-tickets-1980437460757 \n(image of Sandhill Cranes by Sharon Anderson)

Alcatraz is now one of the largest Brandt’s Cormorant breeding colonies\, and one of only two estuarine colonies. Alcatraz seabirds\, including Pigeon Guillemots and Western Gulls\, have been outperforming their ocean counterparts despite a high level of human disturbance in this urban setting. The bay hosts a large anchovy population and demersal fish nursery\, with strong tidal currents and the river plume into the ocean concentrating prey for seabirds and other predators. We are working to mitigate anthropogenic stressors to support this important colony and increase seabird resilience to climate change.\n \nJulie Thayer has worked in the California Current marine ecosystem for three decades\, with a brief hiatus on the north coast of Brazil. She studied at the University of California at Santa Cruz/Long Marine Lab and UC Davis in Marine Biology and Ecology. Thayer has done field research on Alcatraz seabirds\, studying population changes\, diet\, productivity\, and human disturbance since 1997. \n\n\n  \nSeabird colony at Alcatraz Island\, Photo: Zoe Burr

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Bodega Bay
DESCRIPTION:Why do we go all the way to Bodega Bay? To see loons close up – the Common\, Pacific\, and Red-throated species are all possible. To see Brant\, the sea geese that spend the winter here. To see Double-crested\, Brandt’s and Pelagic cormorants side-by-side\, to strengthen our ID skills. This is a great place for birders of all levels and birders new to Northern California. \nWe’ll meet at 9:30 am at the Tides Wharf and Restaurant\, outside on the deck behind the restaurant. There are restrooms here. From the Tides we’ll drive out to Bodega Head\, and later bird Porto Bodega and other stops around the bay. Precise itinerary tbd by tides and conditions. \nThis is the Norcal coast so be prepared for damp\, cool\, breezy weather—regardless of the forecast. Bring lunch\, as we will gather for a picnic lunch out near Bodega Head. There are restrooms at the meeting point\, and pit toilets at several stops along our route. \nA carpool location will be announced. Given the distance\, and limited parking at some of our stops\, it is helpful to carpool either from our home area or once we set out from the Tides. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy\, with little elevation change.\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeeting point: Behind the Tides Restaurant\, Bodega Bay.\nGPS: 38.328869668535894\, -123.04502163182391 \nDirections: Take US 101 north to Petaluma.
