SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Markham Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Markham Arboretum is a small island of riparian habitat in the middle of suburban Concord that attracts many winter visitors including Northern Flickers\, Yellow-rumped Warblers\, and Hermit Thrushes. The Pacific Flyway is one of four bird migration routes in North America. The Pacific Flyway Center will be front and center for this significant stopover on the north-south migration path for birds that stretches from Alaska to Patagonia. The Center will sit in the middle of this migratory corridor\, allowing every visitor an opportunity to see a great number of waterfowl and shorebirds\, as well as other wetland-dependent species.  \nFifteen newly created wetlands and surrounded by grasslands will serve as the Center’s primary classroom\, providing a vivid and engaging education environment that is home to hundreds of species of native plants and animals. In the future the Education Center will complement the experience with interactive displays that highlight the importance of biodiversity and ecosystems. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Lodi Lake
DESCRIPTION:We’ll bird first at Lodi Lake and its riparian area alongside the Mokelumne River. Plan to see waterfowl and many bird species including Woodpeckers\, White-breasted Nuthatch\, Cedar Waxwing\, Herons\, Warblers and Wood Duck. (We’ve had Varied Thrush in the past but cannot guarantee!) \nFrom Lodi Lake we’ll move on to Woodbridge Ecological Reserve\, where we’ll see waterfowl and other birds\, including hopefully some early-arriving Sandhill Cranes. (The state requires a CDFW Lands Pass at Woodbridge Reserve\, with a fee of $10 per car\, or $6 for seniors. Or check the CDFW website for annual Lands Pass.) \nDress in layers. Bring water\, snacks and lunch if so choose. \nHike Rating: 2 – Easy to moderate loop of 1.5 – 2 miles on level ground with some paved areas. A few very short off-trail lookouts with easy to moderate slope access. DESCRIPTION:**Sorry\, this event has been CANCELLED by MVSD.** \nThis field trip is very suitable for beginning birders! Binoculars are available for borrowing\, just let the leader know in advance to bring an extra pair. \nMoorhen Marsh\, maintained by the Mt. View Sanitary District in Martinez is of the first water treatment facilities in the US that was designed to offer quality habitat for migrating birds. The marsh is usually only open for visits by appointment\, Monday thru Friday\, so this is an unusual chance to visit on a Saturday. We hope to see resident and overwintering ducks geese\, herons\, and passerines. \nJust across the freeway\, McNabney Marsh\, a.k.a Waterbird Regional Preserve\, hosts many more waterbirds and shorebirds as well. Marsh passerines and raptors might also be present. \nWe’ll meet at the observation deck near the south end of McNabney Marsh\, off Arthur Road\, and scan with our scopes. After that we’ll move the cars a short distance and take a walk around the artificial marshes operated by Mt. View Sanitary District. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. DESCRIPTION:Pacheco Marsh is a wetland along the Carquinez Strait\, east of Martinez\, that has been restored by the John Muir Land Trust and recently opened to the public. JMLT is giving us early access\, at 8 AM\, to facilitate the best birding. We’ll meet at the parking lot\, where there are rest rooms\, and walk the flat 2-mile loop trail out through the wetland to the open water. \nAfter Pacheco Marsh\, we may make an optional second stop at the MVSD viewing platform at McNabney Marsh. \nIt can get breezy and foggy here so bring appropriate layers. \nHike Rating: 2 – Flat\, easy loop walk of about 2 miles. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- East County Specialties at Los Vaqueros
DESCRIPTION:Los Vaqueros Reservoir is a relatively remote area overseen by the Contra Costa Water District. The open savannah surrounding the reservoir is one of the best places to observe grassland species such as American Kestrels\, Meadowlarks\, Horned Larks\, and Prairie Falcons. Rarities like Mountain Bluebird\, Lewis’ Woodpeckers\, and Burrowing Owl occasionally show up there as well. We’ll explore Kit Fox Trail and\, if time permits\, maybe the dam area\, too. \nThis trip requires more hiking than most of our outings. The trail is mostly unpaved and there is only one restroom at the trailhead. Please bring lots of water\, sunscreen (there is little shade on the trail)\, an extra layer (it will almost certainly be cold and possibly windy)\, a snack\, and any other equipment you need to hike. Plan accordingly. \nScopes are helpful here. DESCRIPTION:December is prime time for seeing lots of Sandhill Cranes along Staten Island Road in the Sacramento River Delta. Snow and White-fronted Geese and lots of other waterfowl are also assured. DESCRIPTION:Winter ducks on Lake Merritt and other birds are usually easy to see from the sidewalk. The lake is one of the few places in the Bay Area where Barrow’s Goldeneyes can sometimes be seen. An entry fee past the gate at Children’s Fairyland is usually required.\nWe will move to Arrowhead Marsh before 10:00AM\, arriving in time for the king tide. Ridgeway’s Rails are one of the highlights here\, though we will see many other birds. A visit to Garretson Point will follow. However\, because island species are restricted to small areas with limited populations\, they are highly susceptible to natural disasters—such as hurricanes\, volcanic eruptions\, tsunamis\, and rising sea levels—as well as human-caused pressures. This talk focuses on the issues unique to islands and how we might protect these vulnerable species. \n\n\nBob has taught birding classes in the Bay Area for over 25 years and is an avid traveler\, specifically seeking out islands in search of birds. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Woodbridge Road & Sandhill Crane Fly-In
DESCRIPTION:This outing is especially suitable for people with mobility issues. \nA very special trip arranged with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. At 3:45 PM we’ll meet their volunteer docents at the South Unit of the Woodbridge Ecological Reserve\, near Lodi\, where they will introduce us to the many waterfowl and shorebirds that winter in the area. \nAbout 90 minutes before sunset\, we will move over to the blinds that overlook the roosting area for Sandhill Cranes. We’ll be able to sit and watch as hundreds of cranes fly in for the evening. It’s a spectacular event! \nThis trip is open to all MDBA members of any birding level of experience\, and especially suitable for those with mobility issues. The platform overlooking the ponds at the South Unit—our first stop—is about 40 yards from the handicapped parking spots\, up a short\, accessible ramp. The blinds where we’ll sit and watch the cranes fly in are also just a short walk over level ground from the parking spots. There are toilets at the South Unit (and I think at the North Unit too\, though I’m not sure.) \nMDBA trip coordinator Matt Tarlach plans to drive a carpool to accommodate any member who doesn’t want to drive this distance (Woodbridge Reserve is a little over an hour from Heather Farm)\, or drive back after dark. Alcatraz is now one of the largest Brandt’s Cormorant breeding colonies\, and one of only two estuarine colonies. Alcatraz seabirds\, including Pigeon Guillemots and Western Gulls\, have been outperforming their ocean counterparts despite a high level of human disturbance in this urban setting. The bay hosts a large anchovy population and demersal fish nursery\, with strong tidal currents and the river plume into the ocean concentrating prey for seabirds and other predators. We are working to mitigate anthropogenic stressors to support this important colony and increase seabird resilience to climate change.\n \nJulie Thayer has worked in the California Current marine ecosystem for three decades\, with a brief hiatus on the north coast of Brazil. She studied at the University of California at Santa Cruz/Long Marine Lab and UC Davis in Marine Biology and Ecology. DESCRIPTION:Why do we go all the way to Bodega Bay? To see loons close up – the Common\, Pacific\, and Red-throated species are all possible. To see Brant\, the sea geese that spend the winter here. To see Double-crested\, Brandt’s and Pelagic cormorants side-by-side\, to strengthen our ID skills. This is a great place for birders of all levels and birders new to Northern California. \nWe’ll meet at 9:30 am at the Tides Wharf and Restaurant\, outside on the deck behind the restaurant. There are restrooms here. From the Tides we’ll drive out to Bodega Head\, and later bird Porto Bodega and other stops around the bay. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Sunday at the Sewage Ponds (Las Gallinas)
DESCRIPTION:The Las Gallinas Sanitary District maintains a complex of water treatment ponds that are a magnet for migratory waterfowl. Dozens of waterfowl species can be seen here in the winter. The presence of similar species in close proximity\, such as Canada Geese and Cackling Geese\, Horned Grebes and Eared Grebes\, and Snowy Egrets and Great Egrets; makes it a great opportunity to sharpen one’s ID skills. If we’re very lucky\, we may even get to see more uncommon species like Eurasian Wigeon or Least Bittern. \nThis is a good outing for beginner birders to see a diverse mix of northern California winter waterfowl\, and sharpen their ID skills. Blending striking photography with beautiful storytelling\, they’ll share the creative journey behind the book\, highlight regional conservation stories\, and offer tips on bird photography as well as resources for more deeply knowing and protecting our local avian world. Proceeds from the book will benefit Point Blue Conservation Science\, whose scientists guided Dick and Hannah into the world of birds and will join them onstage for this presentation. This talk invites readers\, birders\, and nature lovers to discover the human and natural forces that make this region one of the richest places on the continent for birdwatching. \nDick Evans became interested in photography as a graduate student at Stanford University and continued his practice throughout a forty-seven-year career in the global metals industry that took him all over the world. San Francisco always remained home base\, though\, and he now lives in the city with his wife\, Gretchen. Evans is the author or coauthor of the photography books San Francisco and the Bay Area: The Haight-Ashbury Edition\, The Mission\, and San Francisco’s Chinatown. \nHannah Hindley is a wilderness guide and the recipient of the Thomas Wood Award in Journalism\, the Ellen Meloy Desert Writers Award\, and the Barry Lopez Prize in Nonfiction. She graduated from Harvard with degrees in English and evolutionary biology; she holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from University of Arizona. Her environmental essays can be found in Bay Nature\, The Sun\, Hakai\, and more. Hannah writes about small creatures\, big landscapes\, and the scientists who love them. \nLishka Arata is Point Blue’s Communications Manager and supports\, facilitates\, and leads science communications to engage more people in conservation action. Today its several ponds are home to many resident species\, and it’s often visited by migrants as well. Managed by the Mountain View Sanitary District\, Moorhen Marsh is open for birding only by appointment. This is not a two-day class: Similar outings will be held on both Wednesday and Sunday\, to accommodate various schedules. \nWe’ll meet at 8:30AM in front of the MVSD administration building\, then proceed together into Moorhen Marsh. There will be a short introductory presentation on the birds we hope to see and on birding in general. Then we’ll take a walk around the marsh\, hoping to see and hear egrets\, herons\, warblers and wrens\, with raptors and other species also possible. As we depart Moorhen Marsh we’ll stop at Waterbird Regional Preserve\, just across the freeway\, where we’ll use scopes to identify the variety of long-legged shorebirds\, ducks\, and more who winter there. \nBinoculars will be available to lend. There\, a team of park district retirees\, staff members\, and others curate materials\, develop oral histories\, and recall stories that rarely appear in official documents. She was awarded the 2023 “Outstanding Volunteer” award by the California Association of Recreation and Park Districts. \nHer first book on local history was Oakland’s Equestrian Heritage (Arcadia Publishing 2008). The second is East Bay Hills: A Brief History (The History Press\, 2017)\, which describes the origins of parks in Oakland\, Moraga\, and Castro Valley. She is currently collaborating with the Verona Band of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. \nAmelia serves as trails chair for California State Horsemen’s Association. Region 5 (Alameda and Contra Costa Counties). She sits on three nonprofit boards: the Regional Park Association\, the Oakland Heritage Alliance\, and the Friends of Joaquin Miller Park. She and her family live on Peralta Creek in Oakland with a plus-size German Shepherd named Chewy.

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Black Diamond Mines
DESCRIPTION:This trip includes a vigorous climb up a steep trail\, with an elevation gain of several hundred feet. Why make the climb? Because the location offers the best chance in our MDBA territory to see and hear Canyon Wrens! The trail is rocky\, and footing can be tricky—Be advised!\nThere is no guarantee of finding the elusive wrens\, but we will certainly see many other birds. California Thrasher\, Rufous-crowned Sparrow and Phainopepla are often seen here. At the worst\, we will share an adventure in a beautiful and historically interesting location. Be sure to bring enough water\, and lunch or a snack. \nRating: Category 3\, steep rocky trail\, potentially hot.\nElevation change: 600 feet\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: Black Diamond Mines parking lot at the south end of Somersville Road.\nDirections: Exit Hwy 4 at Somersville Road in Antioch.
