SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Sacramento/Colusa National Wildlife Refuges
DESCRIPTION:Sacramento and Colusa National Wildlife Refuges are premier locations to see massive flocks of Snow and White-fronted Geese and tons of other waterfowl\, raptors and other birds. They are must-see annual winter destinations. We will drive the auto tour routes and stop at the viewing platforms at both of these refuges\, and visit a couple of other nearby locations. \nHike Rating: Category 1-Easy\nDistance: Little walking but plenty of driving\, up to 300 miles.\nElevation change: N/A\nLeader: Steve Buffi 925-200-4555 and Ted Robertson 925-899-1872\nMeet: North Dunnigan rest area on I-5 at 8:15 AM\nGPS: 38.892453020152\, -121.9774519444179 \nDirections: Go north on I-680\, cross the Benica Bridge (toll)\, merge onto I-80 East at Cordelia. At Vacaville\, merge onto I-505 North\, follow for 34 miles and merge onto I-5 North just south of Dunnigan. Continue past the town to the rest stop. \nThis is an all-day trip and we will not be home until after dark. Participants who desire to stay overnight may find lodging in Williams. Bring Lunch and Liquids. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Staten Island Road
DESCRIPTION:December is prime time for seeing lots of Sandhill Cranes along Staten Island Road in the Sacramento River Delta. Snow and White-fronted Geese and lots of other waterfowl are also assured. This trip is timed to spend a couple of hours viewing the grazing birds before a hoped for sunset flight of the whole flock from their roosting ponds. This is a must-see annual winter field trip. We will slowly drive the length of Staten Island Road\, and stop at the best road-side location to set up our scopes. \nHike rating: 1 – Easy. As an award finalist for children’s non-fiction\, this book explores the surprising world of bird adaptation\, where each egg\, beak\, and wing has a unique story. \nThe book reveals how birds have brilliantly adapted to a changing environment over time\, resulting in an incredible variety of sizes\, colors\, wings\, nests\, eggs\, beaks\, feet\, and feathers.
