SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Sunday at the Sewage Ponds (Las Gallinas)
DESCRIPTION:The Las Gallinas Sanitary District maintains a complex of water treatment ponds that are a magnet for migratory waterfowl. Dozens of waterfowl species can be seen here in the winter. The presence of similar species in close proximity\, such as Canada Geese and Cackling Geese\, Horned Grebes and Eared Grebes\, and Snowy Egrets and Great Egrets; makes it a great opportunity to sharpen one’s ID skills. If we’re very lucky\, we may even get to see more uncommon species like Eurasian Wigeon or Least Bittern. \nThis is a good outing for beginner birders to see a diverse mix of northern California winter waterfowl\, and sharpen their ID skills. If you have a scope\, do bring it\, as they’re helpful here. \nThere is one portable bathroom at the trailhead\, no drinking water\, and it’s colder at the reservoir than it usually is inland. Please plan accordingly. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Mostly level paths\, up to 1 mile walking\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade\, elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com\nMeet: Las Gallinas Reservoir Birding Loop on Smith Ranch Rd.\, San Rafael\, CA.\nGPS: 38.025632105791466\, -122.51775182773106 \nDirections: Take I-580 West toward San Rafael. Go over the San Rafael Bridge. Then\, merge onto US-101 North. Stay on the 101 for 4.5 miles\, then take Exit 456 onto Smith Ranch Rd. Stay on Smith Ranch Rd. for 1.5 miles until you reach a small parking lot on your left before the small reservoir building. There is a portable restroom and a bridge leading to the trailhead there. \nThis event is limited to 15 participants. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- East County Specialties at Los Vaqueros
DESCRIPTION:Los Vaqueros Reservoir is a relatively remote area overseen by the Contra Costa Water District. The open savannah surrounding the reservoir is one of the best places to observe grassland species such as American Kestrels\, Meadowlarks\, Horned Larks\, and Prairie Falcons. Rarities like Mountain Bluebird\, Lewis’ Woodpeckers\, and Burrowing Owl occasionally show up there as well. We’ll explore Kit Fox Trail and\, if time permits\, maybe the dam area\, too. \nThis trip requires more hiking than most of our outings. The trail is mostly unpaved and there is only one restroom at the trailhead. Please bring lots of water\, sunscreen (there is little shade on the trail)\, an extra layer (it will almost certainly be cold and possibly windy)\, a snack\, and any other equipment you need to hike. Plan accordingly. \nScopes are helpful here. The trip leader will have one to share\, and if you have one of your own feel free to bring it. \nDay parking is $6 per vehicle. \nTrail Rating: 3 – long and hilly\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeet: Walnut Staging Area\nGPS for meeting point: 37.8600370201877\, -121.69675961271844 \nDirections: From Clayton\, take Marsh Creek Road out past Round Valley. At the T-intersection where Marsh Creek turns left toward Brentwood\, continue straight onto Camino Diablo. About a mile farther\, turn right onto Walnut Blvd and continue to the entrance kiosk. After you pay the fee\, the meeting point is to the right. \nThis trip is limited to 12 participants. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Coyote Hills\, Fremont
DESCRIPTION:Ducks & Peeps! \nThis morning walk will take us on multiple trails within the beloved Coyote Hills Regional Park complex to search for southbound\, migrating shorebirds and inbound\, wintering waterfowl. We’ll first check out the reedy margins of the marshes on Chochenyo and Muskrat trails\, keeping an eye out for chatty Common Yellowthroats and Marsh Wrens\, and maybe even a secretive rail. Then\, we’ll cross the scrubby hills of Lizard Rock Trail\, where White-tailed Kites are not uncommon\, on our way to Bayview Trail. The trail is only a few yards away from the salt marsh evaporation ponds–the perfect place to search for flocks of migrating shorebirds. Some luck and a bit of scoping may even yield rarer species such as Snowy Plovers. \nShorebird ID can be both challenging and rewarding. This walk is especially good for intermediate birders looking to gain more experience with this tricky taxon\, but as always\, all skill levels are welcome! \nScopes are useful here. Carpooling is encouraged. \nThe trail is mostly unpaved and there is only one restroom at the trailhead. At this time of year it can be cool and windy\, or hot by mid-day. Please bring plenty of water\, sunscreen\, an extra layer (it can be cold and windy)\, a snack\, and any other equipment you need for hiking. \nTrip leader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nHike Rating: 2 – Some hills; more than 1 mile of walking\nMeeting Point: The parking lot at 8000 Patterson Ranch Rd.\, Fremont\, CA 9455. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Lafayette Lakeside Loop
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after a hard day’s work at the beautiful Lafayette Reservoir. Tucked into the hills between the coast and interior Contra Costa County\, the reservoir’s forested hills are home to many pine-oak residents like Spotted Towhees\, Red-shouldered Hawks\, and Band-tailed Pigeons. The iconic 100-year-old\, 170-foot-tall outlet tower in the center of the reservoir attracts many cormorants and the marshes around the edge often harbor herons. We may even get lucky enough to see a flock of American White Pelicans. \nWe’ll walk the 3-mile\, paved Lafayette Reservoir Trail that circles the reservoir to see what’s out there. Parking is $2/hr or $7/day. Please factor in northbound and eastbound traffic when planning your departure. \nTrail Rating: 2 – Over 2 miles walking with a couple of short steep climbs.\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeeting Point: The northern end of the parking lot (closer to the boathouse) of Lafayette Reservoir\, 3849 Mount Diablo Blvd\, Lafayette\, CA 94563 \nThis trip is limited to 15 participants. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Pt. Pinole: Shorebirds in the Shade
DESCRIPTION:We’ll search for shorebirds in the shade of the fragrant eucalyptus groves that line the shores of Pt. Pinole Regional Park. July marks the beginning of shorebird migration: peeps\, plovers\, and more are starting to trickle back in from the north. We’ll scan the beach as the tide rises for shorebirds and marine ducks. The park can also yield surprises\, like the Bobolink that lingered there last fall. \nThe trail is narrow\, dusty\, and rocky at points. There are not many places to sit and rest along the way. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip — Shadow Cliffs Rookeries
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, a few herons and cormorants nest in the tall trees in the riparian area of the park. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Owl Prowl at Hidden Lakes
DESCRIPTION:An evening walk from Hidden Lakes to Hidden Valley Park and back\, to look for owls. We’ll first hike to the eucalyptus grove Hidden Valley Park to try to catch Great Horned Owls dueting. As we make our way back to Hidden Lakes\, we’ll keep our eyes and ears out for Barn Owls and other nighttime critters. \nThe trail is unpaved\, dusty\, narrow\, and steep in a couple of places. Please wear hiking shoes and bring any other hiking equipment you may need. \nIt will be dark for the majority of the walk\, so please bring a headlamp and/or flashlight to navigate\, preferably one with red light settings that are easier on animals’ eyes. I have 1 extra red light flashlight. \nTrail Rating: 2 – A few stretches of broken ground\, or substantially over 1 mile on easy trails\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeeting Point: Hidden Lakes Park\, Morello Ave & Chilpancingo Pkwy\, Martinez\, CA 94553.\nDirections: Take the I-680 North toward Sacramento. Then\, take Exit 52 to Burnett Ave toward Concord Ave. Continue onto Burnett Ave for 0.1 miles before turning left onto Diamond Blvd. Next\, turn left onto Concord Ave and continue on Chilpancingo Parkway for 1.5 miles. Hidden Lakes Park will be on the right. \nWe’ll meet at the sand volleyball court near the playground next to the big soccer field. \nThis trip is limited to 10 participants. Most of our trips are open to the public but due to the late hour\, this is a members-only event. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/owl-prowl-at-hidden-lakes-tickets-1324638743139

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- A Sunset Bird Walk on the Martinez Shoreline
DESCRIPTION:For this trip\, we’ll be taking a leisurely sunset walk around the lagoon and shoreline of Radke Martinez Regional Shoreline Park. This flat\, unpaved trail meanders through a habitat mosaic of urban parkland\, saltmarsh\, and seashore. It’s a good outing for beginner birders to see a diverse mix of common northern California species at fairly close range. \nWe’ll be walking the trail during an incoming mid-tide\, which hopefully will push some shorebird species and seagoing ducks closer to the trail. We’ll see! This is usually a good spot for Marsh Wren\, Black-necked Stilt\, and Black-crowned Night-Heron regardless of tidal condition. \nBathrooms\, water fountains\, and parking are plentiful\, but it may be colder at the shoreline than it is inland. Dress in layers just in case. \nTrail Rating: 1 – Easy. Mostly level paths\, up to 1 mile walking\nLeader: Elisa Fernandes-McDade (elisa.fernandesmcdade@gmail.com)\nMeeting Point: 87 N Court St\, Martinez\, CA 94553. (The first parking lot on the right on N Court St.)\nDirections: Take the I-680 north toward Sacramento. Take Exit 56\, Waterfront Rd. toward Marina Vista Rd. Turn left onto Waterfront Rd. and continue onto Marina Vista Ave. Turn right onto Ferry St. Then\, turn right onto Joe DiMaggio Dr. Then\, turn left onto N Court St. The Meeting Point is the first big parking lot on the right. \nThis trip is limited to 12 participants. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sunset-bird-walk-on-the-martinez-shoreline-tickets-1324625413269 \n(Photo of Black-crowned Night Heron by Warren Regelmann)
