SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Black Diamond Mines
DESCRIPTION:This trip includes a vigorous climb up a steep trail\, with an elevation gain of several hundred feet. Why make the climb? Because the location offers the best chance in our MDBA territory to see and hear Canyon Wrens! The trail is rocky\, and footing can be tricky—Be advised!\nThere is no guarantee of finding the elusive wrens\, but we will certainly see many other birds. California Thrasher\, Rufous-crowned Sparrow and Phainopepla are often seen here. At the worst\, we will share an adventure in a beautiful and historically interesting location. Be sure to bring enough water\, and lunch or a snack. \nRating: Category 3\, steep rocky trail\, potentially hot.\nElevation change: 600 feet\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: Black Diamond Mines parking lot at the south end of Somersville Road.\nDirections: Exit Hwy 4 at Somersville Road in Antioch. Drive south\, enter the park gate and drive about 1 mile uphill to the last parking lot at the road’s end. \nThis trip is limited to 12 participants. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Birding Moorhen Marsh
DESCRIPTION:An outing for birders of all experience levels\, and especially good for beginners. \nMoorhen Marsh in Martinez was one of the first water treatment facilities in the US designed to provide healthy habitat for birds. Today its several ponds are home to many resident species\, and it’s often visited by migrants as well. Managed by the Mountain View Sanitary District\, Moorhen Marsh is open for birding only by appointment. This is not a two-day class: Similar outings will be held on both Wednesday and Sunday\, to accommodate various schedules. \nWe’ll meet at 8:30AM in front of the MVSD administration building\, then proceed together into Moorhen Marsh. There will be a short introductory presentation on the birds we hope to see and on birding in general. Then we’ll take a walk around the marsh\, hoping to see and hear egrets\, herons\, warblers and wrens\, with raptors and other species also possible. As we depart Moorhen Marsh we’ll stop at Waterbird Regional Preserve\, just across the freeway\, where we’ll use scopes to identify the variety of long-legged shorebirds\, ducks\, and more who winter there. \nBinoculars will be available to lend. If you’d like to borrow a pair please contact the leader in advance\, so we have enough on hand. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. Unpaved paths\, potentially muddy if it’s rained recently.\nElevation change: N/A\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\, Cheryl Abel and Elisa Fernandes-McDade.\nMeet: In front of the MVSD administration building at 8:30AM. Please note that Moorhen Marsh is gated. If you’re more than a few minutes late you won’t be able to get in.\nDirections: From I-680 northbound\, exit at Pacheco Blvd\, turn right onto Arthur Road and go under the freeway. At the end of Arthur Road\, continue ahead and left through the MVSD gate. Follow the service road about half a mile and proceed through the tunnel under the freeway—watch for oncoming traffic! After emerging from the tunnel\, the admin building will be on your right. \nRegister HERE for Sunday March 29:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-moorhen-marsh-beginners-welcome-tickets-1983197453971 \nor HERE for the same itinerary on March 25:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-moorhen-marsh-tickets-1983167706997 \n(Image of Black-crowned Night Herons by Isaac Aronow)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Bodega Bay
DESCRIPTION:Why do we go all the way to Bodega Bay? To see loons close up – the Common\, Pacific\, and Red-throated species are all possible. To see Brant\, the sea geese that spend the winter here. To see Double-crested\, Brandt’s and Pelagic cormorants side-by-side\, to strengthen our ID skills. This is a great place for birders of all levels and birders new to Northern California. \nWe’ll meet at 9:30 am at the Tides Wharf and Restaurant\, outside on the deck behind the restaurant. There are restrooms here. From the Tides we’ll drive out to Bodega Head\, and later bird Porto Bodega and other stops around the bay. Precise itinerary tbd by tides and conditions. \nThis is the Norcal coast so be prepared for damp\, cool\, breezy weather—regardless of the forecast. Bring lunch\, as we will gather for a picnic lunch out near Bodega Head. There are restrooms at the meeting point\, and pit toilets at several stops along our route. \nA carpool location will be announced. Given the distance\, and limited parking at some of our stops\, it is helpful to carpool either from our home area or once we set out from the Tides. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy\, with little elevation change.\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeeting point: Behind the Tides Restaurant\, Bodega Bay.\nGPS: 38.328869668535894\, -123.04502163182391 \nDirections: Take US 101 north to Petaluma. Exit at Washington and head SW. Washington becomes Bodega Ave\, which becomes Petaluma-Valley Ford Rd\, which eventually merges into CA Hwy 1. Take Hwy 1 to Bodega Bay. After passing the Inn at the Tides\, you’ll see the Tides Restaurant on the left. From Walnut Creek\, it’s about a 2 hour drive. \nRegister HERE:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-around-bodega-bay-tickets-1980647264285 \n(image by Pam Lorenz)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Woodbridge Road & Sandhill Crane Fly-In
DESCRIPTION:This outing is especially suitable for people with mobility issues. \nA very special trip arranged with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. At 3:45 PM we’ll meet their volunteer docents at the South Unit of the Woodbridge Ecological Reserve\, near Lodi\, where they will introduce us to the many waterfowl and shorebirds that winter in the area. \nAbout 90 minutes before sunset\, we will move over to the blinds that overlook the roosting area for Sandhill Cranes. We’ll be able to sit and watch as hundreds of cranes fly in for the evening. It’s a spectacular event! \nThis trip is open to all MDBA members of any birding level of experience\, and especially suitable for those with mobility issues. The platform overlooking the ponds at the South Unit—our first stop—is about 40 yards from the handicapped parking spots\, up a short\, accessible ramp. The blinds where we’ll sit and watch the cranes fly in are also just a short walk over level ground from the parking spots. There are toilets at the South Unit (and I think at the North Unit too\, though I’m not sure.) \nMDBA trip coordinator Matt Tarlach plans to drive a carpool to accommodate any member who doesn’t want to drive this distance (Woodbridge Reserve is a little over an hour from Heather Farm)\, or drive back after dark. If you would like to ride with this group\, please email ASAP after signing up\, so he knows how many would like to join the carpool. We may rent a minivan or other vehicle\, depending on what’s needed. \nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\nHike Rating: 0. A few very short walks over flat terrain.\nMeet: Carpool will meet at Heather Farm. If driving on your own\, meet at 3:45 at the South Unit of Woodbridge Ecological Reserve\nGPS for the meeting point: 38.15775478150474\, -121.44355433233056 \nTrip goes rain or shine. The blinds are open and unheated\, so dress to sit outdoors until after sunset\, about 90 minutes. \nThere is room in the blinds for about 25 people but parking for only about 14 cars. Plan to drive with a friend\, or to share a casual carpool with another member. \nDue to the capacity limit and expected strong interest\, this trip is for MDBA members only. Members may bring a guest; if you’d like to bring more than one guest please email the leader before booking. If you may bring children\, please consider the need to sit quietly outdoors\, on a cool evening\, for over an hour. \nThere is no charge by MDBA for this event—including for the carpool\, if needed. However\, every attendee must have a Lands Pass from the CA DFW: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Licensing/Lands-Pass \nSign up at the link below. And if the outing is ‘Sold Out’\, please join the waitlist! There are usually some cancellations from the early bookings:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/woodbridge-road-sandhill-crane-fly-in-tickets-1980437460757 \n(image of Sandhill Cranes by Sharon Anderson)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- McNabney Marsh & MVSD
DESCRIPTION:**Sorry\, this event has been CANCELLED by MVSD.** \nThis field trip is very suitable for beginning birders! Binoculars are available for borrowing\, just let the leader know in advance to bring an extra pair. \nMoorhen Marsh\, maintained by the Mt. View Sanitary District in Martinez is of the first water treatment facilities in the US that was designed to offer quality habitat for migrating birds. The marsh is usually only open for visits by appointment\, Monday thru Friday\, so this is an unusual chance to visit on a Saturday. We hope to see resident and overwintering ducks geese\, herons\, and passerines. \nJust across the freeway\, McNabney Marsh\, a.k.a Waterbird Regional Preserve\, hosts many more waterbirds and shorebirds as well. Marsh passerines and raptors might also be present. \nWe’ll meet at the observation deck near the south end of McNabney Marsh\, off Arthur Road\, and scan with our scopes. After that we’ll move the cars a short distance and take a walk around the artificial marshes operated by Mt. View Sanitary District. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. Paths are unpaved paths and potentially muddy\, if it’s rained recently.\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: The observation deck off Arthur Road at 8:30AM.\nGPS for meeting point: 38.019304268086714\, -122.09612963848679 \nDirections: From I-680 northbound\, exit at Pacheco Blvd\, turn right onto Arthur Road and go under the freeway. Arthur Road will bend left. Where Arthur Road ends the paved road turns sharp left through a gate onto MVSD’s private road. Drive about .3 mile to the gravel parking lot just before the one-lane tunnel. The observation deck is to the right (east) of the road. \nLimited to 15 participants. Participants acknowledge the MDBA Liability Waiver (available during registration)\, and will be required to sign a release of viability in order to enter the MVSD facility. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-mvsd-and-mcnabney-marsh-tickets-1853799075939 \n(Image by Alan Bade)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Drakes Breach and Pt. Reyes National Seashore
DESCRIPTION:Point Reyes is one of the premiere birding locations in Northern California\, a great spot to find rarities during migration. We’ll meet at Drake’s Beach\, where there is excellent birding and a comfort stop\, and then head out to the “fish docks.” We may skip the lighthouse overlook on this trip and see if that time can be better spent elsewhere. \nBring water and lunch as this area is remote. \nRating: Category 2 — some walking on paved roads and groomed trails with significant grade.\nElevation change: 150 ft\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\, 925 482 6129\nMeet: Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center\, Drake’s Beach\n1 Drakes Beach Road\, Inverness\, CA 94937\nGPS: 38.027828257127936\, -122.96201741318059 \nDirections: Depending on your starting point\, take the best route to highway 101 north of San Rafael. From 101\, take Lucas Valley Road to Nicasio. At the reservoir turn left. Follow signs to Point Reyes Station\, and when you get to town turn left onto US-1. After passing through town (the Bovine Bakery is a traditional stop for breakfast pastries)\, turn right from US-1 onto Sir Francis Drake Blvd and follow it for 15 miles to Drakes Beach Road. Turn left and continue down Drakes Beach Road to the parking lot at the end. Leader will be parked near the visitor center. \nDue to limited parking at several stops on the Outer Point\, this field trip is limited to 12 participants. Sharing a car is helpful! There’s room to leave extra cars at the Drake’s Beach meeting point. \nSign up HERE:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/drakes-beach-point-reyes-national-seashore-registration-1598818371789 \n(Photo of Virginia Rail by Maren Smith)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Outer Point Reyes
DESCRIPTION:Point Reyes is one of the premiere birding locations in Northern California\, a great spot to find rarities during migration—like the Prairie Warbler pictured above (image by Beth Branthaver). MDBA tries to visit at least twice a year. On our spring trip we hope to see northbound migrants as well as resident birds in their best plumage. The exact itinerary will depend on weather\, but after checking Drake’s Beach and the lagoon behind it we’ll probably visit the lighthouse area\, and the ‘fish docks.’ After a lunch break (BYO) we may walk down the Avenue of Cypresses to the old RCA building. \nBring water and lunch\, as this area is remote. Weather is highly changeable—bring one more warm layer than you think you’ll need\, and sun protection too! \nRating: Category 2 — some walking through grass under trees\, and on paved roads with some significant grade.\nElevation change: 100 ft\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center\, Drake’s Beach\nGPS: 38.027828257127936\, -122.96201741318059\nDirections: Depending on your starting point\, take the best route to San Rafael and go North on US 101. From 101\, take Lucas Valley Road to Nicasio. At the reservoir turn left. Follow signs to Point Reyes Station\, and when you get to town turn left onto US-1. SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Black Diamond Mines
DESCRIPTION:This trip includes a steep climb up a rocky trail with an elevation gain of several hundred feet. Why make the climb? Because the location offers the best chance in our MDBA territory to see and hear Canyon Wrens! Footing can be tricky—be advised!\nThere is no guarantee on finding the wrens\, but we will certainly see many other birds. California Thrasher\, Rufous-crowned Sparrow and Phainopepla are often seen here though again\, nothing is certain. At the worst we will share an adventure in a beautiful and historically interesting location. Be sure to bring enough water\, and lunch. \nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\nRating: Category 3\, difficult uphill trail\, potentially hot.\nElevation change: 600 feet\, steep in places.\nMeet: Black Diamond Mines parking lot at the top of Somersville Road. \nDirections: Exit Hwy 4 at Somersville Road in Antioch. Drive south\, enter the park gate and drive about 1 mile uphill to the last parking lot at the road’s end. \nThis trip is limited to 12 participants. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-hike-at-black-diamond-mines-tickets-1250808354459 \n(Photo of Canyon Wren by Vicky Atkinson)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Moorhen + McNabney Marshes
DESCRIPTION:Two trips this month! Mt. View Sanitary District has offered MDBA special access for a Saturday visit. Both trips will be open to the public\, and are very suitable for beginning birders. Binoculars are available for borrowing—just email the leader in advance so they know how many extra pairs to bring. \nCreated by MVSD in 1974\, Moorhen Marsh was the first wetland on the west coast that made use of treated effluents as its primary water source. Today the 21-acre constructed wetland offers critical habitat for wildlife. Native species dependent on Moorhen Marsh for habitat include the western pond turtle\, North American river otter\, and many species of birds. Directly across the freeway\, McNabney Marsh—aka Waterbird Regional Preserve—in winter hosts many species of ducks\, shorebirds and waterbirds. \nWe’ll meet at the observation deck near the south end of McNabney Marsh\, off of Arthur Road\, and scan the area with our scopes. After that we’ll move the cars a short distance into the MVSD facility and take a walk around the cleverly human-made Moorhen Marsh. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. Unpaved paths can get muddy after rain.\nElevation change: N/A\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com \nMeet: Meet at the observation deck off of Arthur Road at 8:30 AM. There’s plenty of parking. \nDirections: From I-680 northbound\, exit at Pacheco Blvd\, turn right onto Arthur Road and go under the freeway. Arthur Road will bend left. Where Arthur Road ends\, the paved road turns sharp left through a gate into Mt. View Sanitary’s private access road. Drive about .3 mile to the gravel parking lot just before the one-lane tunnel. The observation deck is to the right (east) of the road. \nThis field trip is free and open to the public\, with prior registration required. Limited to 15 participants. Participants will need to click to acknowledge the MDBA liability waiver. Anyone entering Moorhen Marsh will need to sign the MVSD liability waiver also\, to be provided on site. \nRegister for Wednesday 3/19:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-moorhen-marsh-and-mcnabney-marsh-tickets-1252473153919 \n(Image of Black-crowned Night Herons by Isaac Aronow.)

SUMMARY:Contra Costa Large Day
DESCRIPTION:Saturday January 4\, Predawn to Dusk \nSpend the first Saturday of the New Year on an all-day birding trip that will visit several different habitats spread across Contra Costa County. To maximize the fun and minimize issues with parking\, we’ll carpool\, starting from a place or places to be discussed by the group—perhaps Heather Farm and/or Lafayette BART. \nFrom the meeting point we’ll drive to Valle Vista\, arriving before dawn to listen for owls and maybe spot a poorwill. We’ll spend the first part of the morning at this rich hotspot\, then pile into our cars and drive west to Richmond where we’ll scope the Bay\, and look for shorebirds. Then back east across the county on Highway 4\, making multiple stops before finishing our day in the Delta. The exact itinerary will be determined partly by what we find during our Christmas Bird Counts. \n“Big” days are known for their frenetic pace\, with birders pushing hard to max out their species count. This “Large” day will be somewhat more relaxed. We’ll stay together in a group as much as possible\, and take relaxed breaks when needed. The pace will still be more urgent than a typical field trip\, though\, and this is an all-day commitment—things to consider before signing up. More details to follow by email\, to those who sign up. Please note that signups for this trip (and wait list) close a week in advance. \nHike Rating: 2 – moderate grades in some places\, probably a few miles total walking throughout the day.\nElevation change: TBD\, probably not over 100 feet in one climb.\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, 925-482-6129\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: TBD \nThis special trip is for MDBA members only\, and limited to 12 participants. We will carpool\, hopefully fitting into 3 vehicles to minimize parking hassles. Register HERE:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/contra-costa-large-day-tickets-1090305837109

SUMMARY:Introducing the Birds of Heather Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Natural Area at Heather Farm is an underrated birding site. It is possible to see five species of heron one day\, and on the next five species of sparrow. Common Gallinule and Sora are frequently reported\, along with wintering ducks and migrating passerines. All told\, over 200 species have been recorded at Heather Farm over the years. The Natural Area is also in need of conservation advocacy\, as it is under constant pressure from park users who are more interested in sports and recreation than wildlife or habitat. \n“Introducing the Birds of Heather Farm” is a series of bird walks intended to promote appreciation of birds and of the Natural Area\, and to help new birders improve their skills. In addition to this announcement in the Quail it will be promoted via flyers in the park and at local businesses. If you are new to birding\, or would enjoy an introduction to Heather Farm\, please sign up via Eventbrite! If you know anyone who’s getting their start in birding invite them to sign up too:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/introducing-the-birds-of-heather-farm-tickets-991048712377 \nIf you’re a somewhat more experienced birder—not necessarily an “expert”—your assistance in this program is invited! MDBA members who can turn out to help with this “Introduction” bird walk\, spotting birds and sharing experience with new birders\, do not need to sign up via Eventbrite. The low number of signup spots is intended to limit the number of beginners so that each may receive some personal attention. \nIf you can join us to help spot birds\, or would like copies of the flyer to post somewhere in the area—your office? your favorite coffee shop? the bulletin board at a library or city facility?—please email Matt: mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com

SUMMARY:MDAS Field Trip -- Outer Point Reyes
DESCRIPTION:Sign up HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/outer-point-reyes-registration-989723909857 \nPoint Reyes is one of the premiere birding locations in Northern California\, a great spot to find rarities during migration—like the Prairie Warbler pictured above (image by Beth Branthaver). Our exact itinerary will depend on weather\, but we’ll probably visit the lighthouse overlook and the “fish docks” area. After lunch we may walk down the “Avenue of Cypresses” to the old RCA building. Bring water and lunch as this area is remote. \nHike rating: Category 2 — about 2 miles total walking\, mostly on paved roads though with some incline.\nElevation change: 100 ft\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, 925-482-6129\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center\, Drake’s Beach\n1 Drakes Beach Road\nInverness\, CA 94937\nGPS: 38.027828257127936\, -122.96201741318059 \nDirections: Depending on your starting point\, take the best route to highway 101 north of San Rafael. \nDue to limited parking at our stops on the Outer Point\, this field trip is limited to 12 participants. Sharing a car is very helpful! There’s room to leave extra cars at the Drakes Beach meeting point. \n(Photo of Prairie Warbler by Beth Branthaver)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Black Diamond Mines
DESCRIPTION:This trip includes a vigorous climb up a steep trail with an elevation gain of several hundred feet. Why? Because the location offers the best chance in our MDBA territory to see and hear Canyon Wrens! The trail is rocky\, and footing can be tricky. Be advised! \nThere is no guarantee on finding the wrens either—but we will certainly see many other birds. California Thrasher\, Rufous-crowned Sparrow and Phainopepla are often seen here though again\, nothing is certain. At the worst we will share an adventure in a beautiful and historically interesting location. Bring water to drink\, and lunch. \nTrail Rating: Category 3\, difficult uphill trail\, potentially hot.\nElevation change: 600 feet\nLeader: Matt Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: Black Diamond Mines parking lot at top of Somersville Road.\nDirections: Exit Hwy 4 at Somersville Road in Antioch. Drive south\, enter the park gate and drive about 1 mile uphill to the last parking lot at road’s end. \nThis trip is limited to 12 participants.\nRegister HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-hike-at-black-diamond-mines-tickets-860407952347

SUMMARY:Introducing the Birds of Heather Farm
DESCRIPTION:A casual walk for birders of all experience levels\, and especially beginners!\nWednesday\, February 21\, 2024\, 8:30 – 10:30am \nHeather Farm Park in Walnut Creek is an underrated birding spot\, home to dozens of resident species and attracting many migrants as well! We’ll meet at the overlook of the Natural Lake\, west of North San Carlos Drive about 100 yards beyond the community center. \nAt 8:30AM an experienced birder or two will be on hand to demonstrate how to properly use binoculars\, and to discuss birding guidebooks and apps. We’ll begin scanning the lake too\, to see which ducks and other birds might be in town for the winter. When we’re good and ready\, we’ll set off on a walk around the lake and adjacent Nature Area—an easy stroll of about half a mile on mostly level\, accessible trails. Along the way we’ll hope to see and hear sparrow\, finch\, woodpecker and warbler\, along with nuthatch and dove. Wrens\, thrushes\, herons\, and raptors are often found here too—though in birding\, as in life\, nothing is guaranteed! Our guides will explain what features on the birds to look for\, to tell one from the other. \nWe should be done around 10:30. Birders of all experience levels are welcome! Binoculars will be available to borrow for those who need them. Trip will go on in gray weather\, but rain or high wind cancels. \nFree event\, with pre-registration requested.\nSign up HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introducing-the-birds-of-heather-farm-tickets-802310411037

SUMMARY:MDAS Field Trip -- Outer Point Reyes
DESCRIPTION:Outer Point Reyes is a wonderful place for fall migrants\, many of them Eastern passerine vagrants. You never know who’ll turn up…sightings in past years have included Blackburnians and Blackpolls; Chestnut-sided\, Connecticut\, Black-and-white\, Magnolia\, Prothonotary\, Yellow-throated\, and Black-throated Blues…and that’s just the warblers. We’ve also seen Yellow-green\, Red-eyed and White-eyed Vireos\, Orchard Orioles\, Ovenbirds\, American Redstarts\, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks\, Peregrine Falcons\, and Broad-winged Hawks. \nTo be clear\, we don’t see all—or even most!—of these species every year. Not even one is guaranteed. But we can hope! The chance to see migrants is very much dependent on the weather: an absence of winds from the northwest and an overcast night sky helps to hold these land birds at the Outer Point. More reliable are the waterbirds: we usually have Common Murres\, Pigeon Guillemots\, Cormorants\, and Loons. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: in the past this trip has met at Bear Valley. This year we’ll try meeting at the Drake’s Beach visitor center\, closer to the hotspots on the Outer Point. At Drake’s Beach we’ll combine cars\, as parking on the Outer Point is extremely limited. MDAS does not require carpooling on our trips but in this case it’s very helpful\, so if you’re comfortable sharing a car please come prepared to do so. Or carpool all the way from home with a friend or two! \nWeather is highly changeable even on a good day\, so bring layers and be prepared for damp wind. Storm Warning cancels. Bring lunch and plenty of water\, as the Outer Point is a remote area with no conveniences. If you need to borrow binoculars\, please advise the leader before the trip so they can bring an extra pair. If you have a scope of your own to bring it can be useful for sea-watching. \nHike Rating: Category 2 – Moderate. Two planned walks of ~1 mile on paved\, hilly roads; plus short walks over tricky terrain at a few optional stops.\nElevation change: A few well-graded climbs on paved roads\, none over about 100 feet.\nLeaders: Matt Tarlach\, mtar925@gmail.com\, 925-482-6129 \nMeet: 8:30am at Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center\, Drake’s Beach. Leader will park not far from the picnic tables behind the visitor center. \nThis trip is limited to 15 participants. All Field Trips are first-registered\, first-served.
