SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Birding Moorhen Marsh
DESCRIPTION:An outing for birders of all experience levels\, and especially good for beginners. \nMoorhen Marsh in Martinez was one of the first water treatment facilities in the US designed to provide healthy habitat for birds. Today its several ponds are home to many resident species\, and it’s often visited by migrants as well. Managed by the Mountain View Sanitary District\, Moorhen Marsh is open for birding only by appointment. This is not a two-day class: Similar outings will be held on both Wednesday and Sunday\, to accommodate various schedules. \nWe’ll meet at 8:30AM in front of the MVSD administration building\, then proceed together into Moorhen Marsh. There will be a short introductory presentation on the birds we hope to see and on birding in general. Then we’ll take a walk around the marsh\, hoping to see and hear egrets\, herons\, warblers and wrens\, with raptors and other species also possible. As we depart Moorhen Marsh we’ll stop at Waterbird Regional Preserve\, just across the freeway\, where we’ll use scopes to identify the variety of long-legged shorebirds\, ducks\, and more who winter there. \nBinoculars will be available to lend. If you’d like to borrow a pair please contact the leader in advance\, so we have enough on hand. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. Unpaved paths\, potentially muddy if it’s rained recently.\nElevation change: N/A\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, MDBAFieldtrips@gmail.com\, Cheryl Abel and Elisa Fernandes-McDade.\nMeet: In front of the MVSD administration building at 8:30AM. Please note that Moorhen Marsh is gated. If you’re more than a few minutes late you won’t be able to get in.\nDirections: From I-680 northbound\, exit at Pacheco Blvd\, turn right onto Arthur Road and go under the freeway. At the end of Arthur Road\, continue ahead and left through the MVSD gate. Follow the service road about half a mile and proceed through the tunnel under the freeway—watch for oncoming traffic! After emerging from the tunnel\, the admin building will be on your right. \nRegister HERE for Sunday March 29:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-moorhen-marsh-beginners-welcome-tickets-1983197453971 \nor HERE for the same itinerary on March 25:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-moorhen-marsh-tickets-1983167706997 \n(Image of Black-crowned Night Herons by Isaac Aronow)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- McNabney Marsh & MVSD
DESCRIPTION:**Sorry\, this event has been CANCELLED by MVSD.** \nThis field trip is very suitable for beginning birders! Binoculars are available for borrowing\, just let the leader know in advance to bring an extra pair. \nMoorhen Marsh\, maintained by the Mt. View Sanitary District in Martinez is of the first water treatment facilities in the US that was designed to offer quality habitat for migrating birds. The marsh is usually only open for visits by appointment\, Monday thru Friday\, so this is an unusual chance to visit on a Saturday. We hope to see resident and overwintering ducks geese\, herons\, and passerines. \nJust across the freeway\, McNabney Marsh\, a.k.a Waterbird Regional Preserve\, hosts many more waterbirds and shorebirds as well. Marsh passerines and raptors might also be present. \nWe’ll meet at the observation deck near the south end of McNabney Marsh\, off Arthur Road\, and scan with our scopes. After that we’ll move the cars a short distance and take a walk around the artificial marshes operated by Mt. View Sanitary District. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. Paths are unpaved paths and potentially muddy\, if it’s rained recently.\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com\nMeet: The observation deck off Arthur Road at 8:30AM.\nGPS for meeting point: 38.019304268086714\, -122.09612963848679 \nDirections: From I-680 northbound\, exit at Pacheco Blvd\, turn right onto Arthur Road and go under the freeway. Arthur Road will bend left. Where Arthur Road ends the paved road turns sharp left through a gate onto MVSD’s private road. Drive about .3 mile to the gravel parking lot just before the one-lane tunnel. The observation deck is to the right (east) of the road. \nLimited to 15 participants. Participants acknowledge the MDBA Liability Waiver (available during registration)\, and will be required to sign a release of viability in order to enter the MVSD facility. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-mvsd-and-mcnabney-marsh-tickets-1853799075939 \n(Image by Alan Bade)

SUMMARY:MDBA Field Trip -- Moorhen + McNabney Marshes
DESCRIPTION:Two trips this month! Mt. View Sanitary District has offered MDBA special access for a Saturday visit. Both trips will be open to the public\, and are very suitable for beginning birders. Binoculars are available for borrowing—just email the leader in advance so they know how many extra pairs to bring. \nCreated by MVSD in 1974\, Moorhen Marsh was the first wetland on the west coast that made use of treated effluents as its primary water source. Today the 21-acre constructed wetland offers critical habitat for wildlife. Native species dependent on Moorhen Marsh for habitat include the western pond turtle\, North American river otter\, and many species of birds. Directly across the freeway\, McNabney Marsh—aka Waterbird Regional Preserve—in winter hosts many species of ducks\, shorebirds and waterbirds. \nWe’ll meet at the observation deck near the south end of McNabney Marsh\, off of Arthur Road\, and scan the area with our scopes. After that we’ll move the cars a short distance into the MVSD facility and take a walk around the cleverly human-made Moorhen Marsh. \nHike Rating: 1 – Easy. Under 1 mile on flat terrain. Unpaved paths can get muddy after rain.\nElevation change: N/A\nLeader: Matthew Tarlach\, mdbafieldtrips@gmail.com \nMeet: Meet at the observation deck off of Arthur Road at 8:30 AM. There’s plenty of parking. \nDirections: From I-680 northbound\, exit at Pacheco Blvd\, turn right onto Arthur Road and go under the freeway. Arthur Road will bend left. Where Arthur Road ends\, the paved road turns sharp left through a gate into Mt. View Sanitary’s private access road. Drive about .3 mile to the gravel parking lot just before the one-lane tunnel. DESCRIPTION:Mt. View Sanitary and McNabney Marsh\nTuesday March 14\, 9 AM to 1pm\n \nStarting at the Mt. View Sanitation District Administration Building\, we will spend most of our outing walking around the several large ponds that make up Moorhen Marsh.
